Continuing with the Touring Car theme of late, this time out I attended the Oulton Park round for the second year running. This time out however I would be meeting up with ‘Da Boyz’ and Special Guests… One of the boys had traveled over from mainland Europe to attend this race meeting (and the activities that followed over the next nine days, but more about that elsewhere). The weather was… ok-ish for the majority of the day. There were periods of intense sun shining through the clouds and other times where it was grey, overcast and windy. The rain stayed away for most of the day but for a very short, sharp shower late into proceedings. The clouds were however looming for the whole day.
We had a rough time to meet up with each other and we knew where to head to, and two by two we all arrived till were were all sat in the spaces reserved by one of Da Boyz who had arrived at silly o’clock in the morning time, even though no racing would be taking place till the afternoon, which is kind of normal for Touring Cars I am finding. The schedule was still packed full of support races and the three main events as are the staple of BTCC weekends. We had a good viewing place, bar for the placement of the big screen. We were on the infield at the bottom of the hill after cascades, almost in line with dentons corner at the bottom of the lake. We could see the cars coming down the hill after turn one, and driving up lakeside to the hairpin, then back around hilltop and into the knickerbrook chicane. The big screen provided a view of the action from the rest of the track.
Lunch was provided by some of the boys who brought with them a large amount of sandwiches, crisps, snacks and some drinks, so we could avoid the atrociously bumped up prices of the trackside vendors, who on BTCC weekends really do take the piss. But the worst thing is.. people are actually still buying food from them. A BTCC weekend is a much more expensive weekend anyway with ticket prices in the £30’s, so to have to pay £12 for some fish and chips is simply an example of ridiculous overcharging.
We had a little walk around the paddock of the BTCC teams taking up the garages as per usual and the tents of the support race teams and drivers and from 12:30 in the afternoon, we enjoyed a full-on afternoon of racing, and a good laugh with good company. Most of whom had never met in person before. As expected however, everyone got on great, just like normal.
Thanks to ‘Da Boyz’ and Special Guests for making this a Sunday to remember and roll on the next one…
